Thomas Merton’s Contemplative Vision: A Spirituality for Today (Fr. Richard J. Hauser, SJ, S.T.L., Ph. D.)

Merton (1915-1968), born in the last century, remains the most influential Christian spiritual writer of our own century. Using videos, lecture and discussion, this workshop combines an orientation to Merton’s life and writing with an introduction to his spirituality.  Focusing on contemplation, it identifies Merton’s continuing legacy to our time.

Father Richard J. Hauser, SJ, S.T.L., Ph. D, was ordained in 1968 and received his licentiate in Sacred Theology from St. Louis University in 1968 and his doctorate in Religion and Religious Education from The Catholic University of America in 1973. He has been at Creighton University in Omaha since 1972, has served as chair of the Department of Theology, director of the Graduate Programs in Christian Spirituality and rector of the Jesuit Community at Creighton University in Omaha. He is currently professor emeritus of theology, assistant to the president for mission and associate director of the Master’s Program in Christian Spirituality.  He has published In His Spirit: A Guide to Today's Spirituality; Moving in the Spirit: Becoming a Contemplative in Action (both Paulist Press) and Finding God in Troubled Times (Loyola Press), plus many articles on theology and spirituality.
