of St. Ottilien in Bavaria. Young people from all over Germany were attracted to the idea of Benedictine life, especially one emphasizing work in foreign missions. The monastery was initially founded in 780 but was secularized in 1803. Refounded on the same site in 1913 by monks of the Ottilien Congregation, the monastery had grown so large that it was raised to the rank of an abbey. Brothers Felix and Egbert were sent from Muensterschwarzach to the United States to collect funds to help care for the needs of the missionaries of our Congregation. While on a fund-raising trip across the United States for his mission in Korea, Bishop Boniface was instrumental in clearing the way for the monks of Muensterschwarzach to establish a mission house in the Archdiocese of Omaha in early 1935. (Psalm 8:4-5). Chuseok is a festival at the autumn equinox linked to a weaving contest held in the Kingdom of Silla. Koreans return to their hometowns to venerate the spirits of their ancestors, offering gifts for the bountiful harvest. The Ganggangsullae is a folk dance held on the night of Chuseok in which women wearing traditional Korean dress, hanbok, hold hands and dance in a circle while singing beneath the harvest moon. People of all times and places create rituals and celebrations in an attempt to draw closer to something or someone greater than themselves.
