The Saint John’s Bible Display
St. Benedict Center offers an interactive permanent display on The Saint John’s Bible, the first hand written bible commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in more than 500 years, on approximately 1,150 pages and including 160 major illuminations. A copy of The Saint John’s Bible’s Heritage Edition has been donated to St. Benedict Center; bound in leather and printed on 100 percent cotton paper, it features the exquisite calligraphy, vibrant imagery and stunning gold and silver illuminations inspired by the original. With scribe and calligrapher Donald Jackson as the creative director, the Heritage Edition is a work of art in its own right and each volume includes Jackson’s signature as its certificate of authenticity. In this state-of-the-art display, visitors can learn how The Saint John's Bible was made using traditional materials like vellum (calfskin), ancient inks, and quills. They can see each of the Heritage Edition's volumes in a separate display case. In an interactive kiosk, they can browse through every page of The Saint John's Bible. They can pray with the text and the illuminations in a meditative prayer space. It is one of the most impressive and accessible displays on The Saint John's Bible in this country.
