“You Are My Servant Whom I Uphold.” (Is 42:1) (Fr. Joel Macul, OSB)

These words begin the first of the Servant Songs in Isaiah. The four Servant Songs were taken up by the earliest Christians as a means and help in understanding who Jesus was and is. The Songs hint at his relationship to the Father, his ministry, mission and especially the meaning of his death and resurrection. They brought hope to an Israel experiencing exile and to early believers struggling to fathom the mystery of how God could find in the powerlessness of suffering a way to freedom and an expression of love. Looking at these four Songs we will seek to understand our mission as a Servant Church and community in today’s society. This is what Matthew is asking of his readers when he quotes the first Song, “And in his name the Gentiles will hope” (see Mt 12:21, Is 42:4). Friday, 7:30 p.m. to Sunday after lunch
