Saint Benedict is the master of balance. He teaches us ‘discretion:’ not too little, not too much of anything, without being mediocre. He encourages us to go with the flow of the day’s and the night’s natural rhythms, of summer and winter, of hunger and satisfaction, of sleeping and being awake, of praying and working (ora et labora). This allows us to conquer exaggerations of any kind. The retreat is a great opportunity to reflect on our way of life.
